Nadia Harbeck, MD, PhD, is director of the Breast Center and holds the chair for Conservative Oncology at the Dept. of OB&GYN, LMU University Hospital, Munich, Germany. She also heads the Oncological Therapy & Clinical Trials Unit, Dept. OB&GYN and the Center for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer at LMU University Hospital, Munich. Moreover, she is a Steering Committee Member of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Munich (CCCMunich).
She obtained her specialist degree (OB&GYN) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and continued to work at the TUM Dept OB&GYN as head of Conservative Oncology and Associate Professor until 2009. From 2009-2011, she was director of the Breast Center at the University of Cologne, Germany.
Prof. Harbeck obtained her medical degree (MD, Dr. med.) from the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich (LMU) and her MD PhD (Habilitation, Dr. med. habil.) from the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany. She has a Specialized Board Certification (Zusatzbezeichnung) and a Training Permit (Weiterbildungsberechtigung) for “Medical Tumor Therapy” as well as a Genetic Counseling Certification OB&GYN (fachgebundene genetische Beratung).
Professor Harbeck is a member of the expert panel issuing the German AGO recommendations for breast cancer therapy (www.ago-online.de). She is a scientific board member of the West German Study Group (www.wsg-online.com). From 2009-2015, she served on the executive board of the EORTC as the Chair of the Translational Research Division. In 2020, she was appointed Subject Editor Breast Cancer for the ESMO Guidelines.
Professor Harbeck is principal investigator or steering committee member of numerous breast cancer trials, particularly with novel targeted compounds and individualized treatment strategies. Her translational research focusses on prognostic and predictive factors in breast cancer and other malignancies. She has a strong interest in eHealth and is a co-developer of CANKADO, an international digital patient diary.
Professor Harbeck is one of the most frequently cited clinical researchers worldwide (highly cited researchers 2021). She has authored more than 570 papers in peer-reviewed journals (h-index 90) and many book chapters. She is Founding Editor of Breast Care (Karger Publishers) and an editorial board member for international journals in oncology. She is a panel member of several international breast cancer consensus conferences and has served as a chair or steering committee member for numerous national and international conferences. She was the Founding Chair for COMBATing breast cancer, an annual conference bridging clinical and translational science (2008-2017) and is the current ESMO Course Director for the Methods in Clinical Cancer Research MCCR Workshop (AACR-EORTC-ESMO), for which she has served as a director-elect since 2017.
Prof. Harbeck is currently Director of Education of the European Society for Medical Oncology, serving on the ESMO Executive Board and ESMO Council. Professor Harbeck is a recipient of the 2020 ESMO Lifetime Achievement Award. She also received several additional recognitions of her clinical and translational research such as the 2021 UPO Award for Women in Academy and Research, the 2015 Bavarian Cancer Patient Award, the 2012 Claudia von Schilling Award, the 2008 EBCC Award, the 2002 AGO Schmidt-Matthiesen Award, a 2001 AACR Award, and the 2001 ASCO Fellowship Merit Award for the highest ranking abstract.
Prof. Harbeck was born in Munich, Germany; she is married with four children. She has dual citizenship (Germany, USA), speaks German and English with native fluency and has a basic knowledge of Spanish and French.
